How being a Gentleman goes beyond wearing a suit.

First and foremost, let us start by saying we here at Grand Gentlemen are fans of men’s fashion. We fully understand the fact that a good suit is not only a staple of your wardrobe, but it can also act as a suit of armor, reaffirming a young man of color’s confidence and pride, especially in todays political climate. Not only can a tailored, well fitting suit equip a young man with a confidence and swagger he may not have had prior to his fitting, but it can sometimes be the shield against unwarranted profiling and judgement based on skin color or social status (because hey, a guy in a nice fitting suit must be doing something right.. right?) but lets take a step back.

Even though we LOVE our suits, and definitely recommend that every stylish man should have at least three good suits in his wardrobe, we want to say publicly something that has been paramount to our mission from day one. To us, being a Gentleman is about TWO things, HOW DO YOU CARRY YOURSELF AND HOW DO YOU TREAT OTHERS?

Yes, dressing well is a form of good manners, and your manners are a reflection of how one carries himself. But there are far more important traits that every man has to reinforce in himself daily. Do you speak kindly to others? Are you honest? Are you encouraging the people around you? Are you a man of your word? How is your work ethic? Do you Listen to understand, or to respond? How do you treat those who can do NOTHING for you? Are you willing to help those who can’t help themselves? Do you give back to your community?

Even though we love to see a sharp dressed man, we love reinforcing these traits into young men in our community even more, because lets face it, not everyone can afford to wear a suit all of the time. Not to mention, we believe fashion is about expressing individuality in the first place. Looking professional is great, but it shouldn’t a prerequisite for the manhood or humanity of young black men.
